The role of biomethane in EU road freight transport: work visit to the European Parliament in Brussels

This week, OG Clean Fuels, along with MEP Caroline Nagtegaal (Renew, Netherlands), hosted an event at the European Parliament on the future of road freight transport: "Navigating the road to net-zero: The role of biomethane in EU road freight transport." In a discussion with Ruud Kempener (European Commission), we explored the opportunities and challenges of biomethane, the existing EU regulatory framework for High Duty Vehicles, and the urgent need for a level playing field for renewable fuels in the transport sector.

Yesterday's conversation emphasized the importance of collaboration among EU stakeholders and the need for supportive EU policy for biomethane in road transport. In this spirit of collective commitment, OG is convinced that the road transport industry can continue to drive positive changes and build a sustainable future.

During the working visit, OG was able to highlight that biomethane is a fully circular fuel and is currently the cleanest energy carrier. Biomethane has the potential to allow a significant portion of trucks in Europe to run on low emissions, thus leading to a breakthrough in achieving a cleaner transport sector and, consequently, a cleaner future.

The day was very inspiring and provided the opportunity to put alternative fuels, in addition to electric or hydrogen, back on the map. OG Clean Fuels would like to thank MEP Caroline Nagtegaal (Renew Europe) for her hospitality and facilitating the conversation, as well as speaker Ruud Kempener from the European Commission for sharing insights into the future of sustainable freight transport.

Many thanks also to all participants, whose involvement and active participation made for an enlightening discussion. This discussion raised questions for the next Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 and the promising future of biomethane in road transport!

For those who were unable to attend, we hope to continue working together on future efforts to enhance sustainability in road transport. Let's make good use of the new insights and relationships so we can collaborate towards a greener, more sustainable future for road freight transport in the EU.
