NILS VAN DER POEl ALLROUND CHAMPION

In phenomenal fashion, Nils van der Poel won the all-around world championship for the first and last time in his career. Van der Poel had to make up 21.7 seconds on Dutchman Patrick Roest in the 10-kilometer race and he succeeded. The Swede set a magnificent track record in Hamar: 12:41.56. And that about a month after his unique performance at long distances during the Olympics.

"This is incredible. I can hardly believe it, I never thought I would be one of these guys. I'm not an all-rounder, so I was going for the long distances. Now it has happened anyway. I never dared to dream of this," said Nils van der Poel.

Farewell
Van der Poel won the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in Beijing and then announced his farewell to speed skating. Why stop? "There are more beautiful adventures I want to have. I know what I had to do to achieve this. I'm not going to keep that up for another 4 years," said the brand new world all-around champion.
